The Night of the Fairies

On the 23rd of June is one of the most potent magic nights. It's called "the night of the fairies".
These fairies - by their names Sinziene (pronounced Syn-zye-ne) - are a little different from their Western tradition counterparts.

They are women of an un-earthly beauty, and during this specific night, they come out and dance - in fairies rings. Whatever man (or male human) is unfortunate enough to see their dance, will never be the same again. If they notice him, they will maim him for life, twisting his limbs, making him mute and deaf, causing him all kinds of bodily distortions. If they don't notice him seeing them, he is still doomed, for no man can see the fairies and see the world the same again - he will either linger dreaming of them or wander endlessly in search of them, not eating, not drinking, not sleeping, until he dies, his life energy all spent.

The fairies come out and dance to bless the fields and make them bountyful, imbue the herbs with potent magic (the plants gathered on this night are exceptionally powerful), bless the cattle with fertility, heal the sick, protect the crops from storms and hail, and punish the unfaithful lovers. The dew gathered during this night is also the most potent "pure water" used in spells. Especially if it's gathered from the very flower of the fairies, that bears the same name (Sanziana), known in Western tradition as Lady's bedstraw or Yellow bedstraw (Galium verum).

Works of magic done during this night are the strongest, for it is the night in which "The Gates between earth and the Skies are opened", especially magic directed to love, family, prosperity, fertility, healing, for the fairies give some of their powers to these works. The dew from the fairies flowers has to be gathered with a new white cloth, and squeezed in a new clay pot, that will be covered before sunlight. It is gathered, from remote places unwalked by people, by mature and old women, who are not allowed to talk to anybody or to each other while they are gathering the dew, until they reach their houses and the clay pot is covered and put in a safe dark place. The women have to go alone to gather the dew and avoid meeting anyone on their journey. This water has the best healing powers and is also the best to use for "marriage" spells.

Of the most potent herbs gathered this night:

Black henbane - is potent only if gathered during this night. It is used mostly in health-related spells, and also for the same type of spells mandrake is used (including the ointment used for flying).
Verbina - the most potent love-spell plant. Has to be taken whole from the ground, only using a silver object (spoon, knife), after dripping white wax and honey on the ground around it. After being gathered, has to be laid on the ground and "watched over" and chanted upon until dawn. One of the most common love spells for couples that have relationship problems are seven stems of verbina braided with seven threads pulled of the shirt of the lover/spouse and then set under their pillow, to strengthen their love with "ties from the Sky".

The "Fern Flower", magical blossom that can only be found during this night. It blooms among the ferns, and the person who looks for it has to go through a ceremonial of fasting/cleasing that is extremely tough in order to be able to find it.

During the day preceding this night, wreaths are braided from the fairies' flowers and thrown on houses, hanged on doors, windows and gates, on cattle horns, on grave stones, at crossroads, for protection and healing. The unmarried young women and young men gather this night around bonfires, the young men brandishing lit torches and moving them in widdershin circles, will call chants upon the fairies to give them good marriages and families in the next year.

The next day, a circlet (crown) is braided from 7 plants: wormwood, fern, basil, chicory, weeping willow, Saint John's wort, and verbina, to which are added wheat and the fairie's flower. The "crown of the fairies" will be worn by the most beautiful virgin of the village, dressed like a bride, who, followed by 5 to 7 other beautiful girls, covered in white and with fairies' flowers in their hair, will "dance the crops", walking around the fields and dancing in circles and cross-shapes, blessing them for the harvest to come.
