The Night of the Wolf is the night between the 29th and the 30th of November, also named "the Night of the Undead", "the Night of the Specters" or the "Night of St. Andrew" - the equivalent of Western Europe's Halloween.
It is the counterpart of the "Night of the Fairies" (midsummer) and the second time in the year when the skies are opened and the veil between worlds opens as well. The cosmic order is disturbed and the fates can be changed. Magic works done during this night are most potent. But if at Midsummer the fairies were coming through the veil to dance on the fields and meadows, in this night the "strigoi" undead or living, roam the land, gather and fight for territory at the crossroads, look for victims to steal their life force, steal the "mana" (fertility) of cattle or crops, take animal shape and hide among the livestock to cause mischief. The song of the rooster is the only thing that drives the "strigoi" away, and the rooster is the only one who can fight them during this night. The Wolf-God gathers the wolves and designates their prey in the year that is now starting. The apotropaic element used for protection during this night is garlic. People rub the window sills and frames and the door frames with garlic, and put garlic cloves to all the openings in the house. Even arms crosses are made of wax and stuck on doors, small solar crosses are made out of wax too and hang on the horns of the cattle. You must not leave your house after dark, even if you hear voices outside calling your name, even if they are familiar voices or the bark of your dog or your cat's meow, for those are the "strigoi" luring you. Among the most important magic rituals of this night is the "watch of the garlic", where people gather and in the light of candles they watch over a basket full of garlic covered with a red cloth. The garlic "watched over" and spelled during this night is used for healing and love magic throughout the year. Fates can be changed and read this night, in the shapes of melted tin or lead poured in blessed water, spells done at the well or in front of the mirror (for mirrors - and water acting as a mirror - are doors to the Otherworld). *NOTE:
- The "dead strigoi" or "undead specters" are human spirits who had returned from the dead. Unlike the upir or vrykolakas, the strigoi would pass through different stages after rising from the grave. Initially, a strigoi might be an invisible poltergeist, tormenting its living family members by moving furniture and stealing food. After some time, it would become visible, looking just as the person did in life. Again, the strigoi would return to its family, stealing cattle, begging for food and bringing disease. Strigoi would feed on humans, first their family members and then anyone else they happened to come across. - The "living strigoi" are the souls of living people, actually the energetic bodies of people who through astral traveling leave their bodies and behave like the "undead strigoi", feeding on the life force of other people. Usually black practitioners of the craft who have to "pay their dues" in life-force to the demonic forces who help them in their craft. |
